Fluid Power World Contributing Editor Josh Cosford gave a webinar presentation on Proper Hose Assembly Guidelines. The transcript has been divided into an 8-part blog post series. The following is an excerpt from that webinar transcript. Hydraulic hoses exist on nearly every hydraulic machine, that’s obvious. The NAHAD Board appoints a new Standards Committee to re-craft the Guidelines to be more useful for members and end-users. Version 1: Hose Assembly Specification Guides, along with Design and Fabrication Guides are created for Corrugated Metal, Industrial, Composite, Hydraulic and Fluoropolymer Hose assemblies.

For decades, SAE J has published guidelines for R1 through R12 series hydraulic hoses. These manufacturer-driven SAE standards have been based on design, construction, and pressure ratings to ensure that hydraulic hoses meet minimum construction requirements.
SAE J provides guidelines for selection, routing, fabrication, installation, replacement, maintenance, and storage of hose and hose assemblies for hydraulic fluid-power systems. Many of these SAE Recommended Practices also may be suitable for other hoses and systems.
Caterpillar was the first to design and manufacture high pressure hydraulic hose known throughout the industry as XT hose. XT hose standards far exceed industry standards still today.
XT hose is impulse tested to one million cycles - twice the industry requirement - at % of working pressure using both new and aged hose. Hydraulic hose manufacturers rely on cold flexibility tests, using guidelines such as ISOto design and rate their hydraulic hose products.
When tested, the sample’s hose or cover should not crack; and when warmed to ambient temperature, the test piece should not leak or crack when subjected to proof pressure. Equipment builders who specify hydraulic hoses that meet SAE and other industry standards have strong documentation that their choice of hose will meet or exceed published performance and life ratings.
This assumes, of course, that the hoses are installed and maintained according to manufacturers’ recommendations.

SAE J Hydraulic Guidelines Foreword – This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide to consider when selecting, routing, fabricating, installing, replacing, maintaining, and storing hose force fluid power systems.
It is subject to change to keep. This SAE Standard gives methods for testing and evaluating performance of the SAE R series of hydraulic hose and hose assemblies (hose and attached end fittings) used in hydraulic fluid power systems.
Specific tests and performance criteria for. OSHA standards require that all hydraulic tools used on or near energized power lines or equip- ment be supplied with non-con- ducting hose having adequate strength for normal operating pressures [29 CFR (f)(3)]. Faulty wiring can also be an electrical hazard.
A regular pre- ventive maintenance program should always include a wiring check. GUIDELINES FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF FLEXIBLE HOSE ASSEMBLIES 2nd edition February Published by ENERGY INSTITUTE, LONDON The Energy Institute is a professional membership body incorporated by Royal Charter Registered charity number Guidelines for Proper Hydraulic Hose Installation.
Written by MAC Hydraulics on August 21st, ; The correct installation of hydraulic hoses is a critical step in ensuring that your hydraulic equipment runs efficiently and reliably. For many systems, flexible hoses are much easier to route and assemble than rigid pipes, and they allow for.
5 Types of Hydraulic Hoses. While there are more types and applications of hoses, the five listed here are a cross-section of specific components, uses, and capabilities: SAE Standard Hose: SAE R1 is a high-pressure hose is used with petroleum or water-based fluids designed to power general industrial applications.
The hose is single steel.Hydraulic fluid power – Electrical connectors for use with industrial hydraulic integrated proportional valves – Dimensions and requirements NFPA/T R (R) Accumulator – Pressure rating supplement to NFPA/T R, – Method for verifying the fatigue and establishing the burst pressure ratings of the pressure.standards have been established by the hose industry.
These common standards, when properly used, provide both the hose user and the hose manufacturer with a common “language” which can be used to describe, develop, produce, and purchase hose of desired quality and suitability.
It is to this purpose that this Handbook is dedicated.
